A non-governmental organization operating in the Northern Region, New Energy, constructed more than 1000 household places of convenience in some communities in the region last year.

Mr Thomas Sayibu Imoro, Programme Manager of the organization disclosed this and explained that the project was to help solve the sanitation problems in the area.

Addressing the 10th Anniversary celebration of the organization here, Mr Imoro observed that some communities in the region were without public places of convenience, "which made most of the residents to do their own thing indiscriminately."

The organization in collaboration with the various district assemblies in the region had also constructed a number of mechanized water systems in some communities, he stated.

This , Mr Imoro explained, was to reduce the rate of guinea worm and other water borne diseases in those communities.

He indicated that four of the mechanized water supply systems were serving over 3000 inhabitants in under-served areas in the Tamale metropolis.

In addition to water and sanitation, the programme manager hinted that the organization under its energy service project provided solar energy to some selected schools, clinics and communities in the region.

According to him the provision of the solar energy would enable students of the various schools to study in the night because most of the students in the "rural areas do not have access to electricity and therefore makes it impossible for them to study in the night."

Mr Imoro commended Water Aid, Partner Round Table UNDP, UNICEF, CWSA, DANIDA and Oxfam as well as Ghana Food and Nutrition Network for their support and sponsorship in all the projects the organization had executed.

He also commended the district assemblies for their cooperation and collaboration in the execution of various projects but urged them to support the communities to take good care of the project.
