Northern regional minister Boniface Abubakar Saddique has played down security concerns over the planned installation of a regent by the Abudu family in Gusheigu. He said that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has been mediating in a dispute between the Abudus and their rivals, the Andanis who are opposed to the election of a regent for the late chief of Gusheigu.

The Andanis say the acting president of the Dagbon Traditional Council has not sanctioned the planned ceremony on Friday. But the Abudus are determined to go ahead with the ceremony. The disagreement has resulted in fears of potential violence in the area. But the minister, who is also the chairman of the regional Security Council, says there is no cause for panic.

“I have had reports from DISEC and REGSEC, they have constantly been giving me situational reports on the ground and we have been meeting all the time to ensure that there is peace and the reports we are getting is that, yesterday the two factions met in the palace to discuss issues and come up with results which I am expecting.

Secondly I was interested in the environment as to whether it is peaceful, tense or easy calm, now DISEC is saying life there is normal, there is no problem at all, nobody seem to be tensed up in Gusheigu even though I have not been there myself but I take the word of DISEC and I know that they will not mislead me,” he said.

Alhaji Saddique said the Security Council did its best to resolve the impasse between the two sides but to no avail. “This is purely a traditional matter. I am the chairman of REGSEC and the regional minister. First and foremost the most important thing that I have to do is to protect life and property and ensure that there is peace, but I cannot interpret the tradition of the people.

REGSEC want to maintain a neutral position, we invited both parties to give their submissions which they did and at the end of the day they all resolved to go and resolve the matter at home,” he said.
