Three persons sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds when a masked man, in typical Hollywood style, opened fire on a group of people who were allegedly holding a meeting in a house at Aboabo, a suburb of Tamale.

The injured persons, who are currently receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, are Abudul-Karim Adam, Mairiga Memunatu and Alhassan.

The police are yet to identify and effect the arrest of the masked man who was said to have bolted immediately after the incident which occurred around 12:30 pm yesterday.

The incident created panic and fear among traders at the Aboabo Market who had to temporarily pack their wares, lock their stores and scurry home.

Even though life has returned to normalcy, there is still some fear prevailing in the metropolis as preparations go on in earnest for the installation of a regent in place of the late Gushie-Na Bawa Yakubu by the Abudus at Gushiegu today.

It is believed that the shooting incident was in connection with the installation of the regent.
The fragile peace currently prevailing in the Dagbon area is likely to be disturbed following the intransigence of the two factions in the age-old Dagbon chieftaincy crisis over the installation of the regent.

The situation has led to heightened tension in Gushiegu and its surrounding areas. Residents of the Tamale metropolis are also apprehensive of the events in Gushiegu since they are very likely to have a trickle down effect on the metropolis.

While members of the Abudu Gate are insisting on and earnestly preparing for the installation of the regent today, the Andanis are vehemently opposed to the event.

Since the beginning of the week, there have been a series of announcements and counter announcements by both sides on some radio stations in the metropolis over the installation of the regent.

The leadership of the two gates have also held a series of meetings and consultations among themselves over this latest misunderstanding.
The late Gushie-Na Yakubu, who was a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), died in the latter part of 2001.

According to the leadership of the Andanis, the circumstances of the installation were contrary to Dagbon custom and tradition, since it had not been sanctioned by the Kuga-Na Braimah Abdulai who is currently the acting Overlord of Dagbon.

In their determination to stop the process, the Andanis, in a letter signed by one of their leading members, Alhaji Abdulai Silimboma, petitioned the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to prevail on the Abudus to stop the process.

They said that if the intended installation was allowed to take place as planned, it could lead to communal violence.

The Abudus, on the other hand, had argued that their decision to install the regent would not be in breach of any custom or tradition.

A spokesperson for the Abudus, Bamvum-Lana Abdulai Mohammadu, explained that the regent, when installed, would have a role to play in facilitating the burial of the late Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II who died in March 2002 at Yendi during the heat of the Dagbon conflict.

He further stated that the decision to install the Regent was not borne out of malice and, therefore, it should not be misconstrued as a means to create confusion.

Sources at the Regional Co-ordinating Council revealed that some security men would be dispatched to Gushiegu yesterday to ensure law and order.
