The Upper East Regional Police Command has placed in custody a police constable and recommended his immediate interdiction for allegedly killing a 40-year-old man, Mr Victor Ballengo, at Navrongo, the capital of the Kassena-Nankana District, at about 8:30 p.m. last Friday.
Constable Patrick Aluko of the Navrongo District Police, who was on duty at the Navrongo branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank, (GCB), was alleged to have corked his AK-47 rifle during a scuffle with the deceased but the weapon went off, killing Ballengo instantly. Consequently, the regional police command has started intensive investigations into the case to establish the facts of the incident. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ofosu-Mensah Gyeabour, who briefed the Daily Graphic on the incident, indicated that two other policemen, who were alleged to have assisted constable Aluko to cause the arrest of the deceased during the scuffle were being used as witnesses in the police investigations. According to ACP Gyeabour, the suspect said in the preliminary investigations that the deceased came to the bank premises where the suspect was on duty and engaged in a scuffle with him without any apparent reason. As a result, Mr Gyeabour said the Constable indicated, he called for assistance from two other policemen, one of whom was on duty at an adjoining bank and both quickly responded and managed to overpower the deceased. The regional police command said constable Aluko alleged that in an attempt to convey Mr Ballengo to the Navrongo Police Station in a pick-up vehicle, a group of young people who were around intercepted them and demanded his immediate release which they refused. ACP Gyeabour said constable Aluko alleged that that resulted in a scuffle and in the process, the deceased attempted to snatch the riffle, which was corked, from him which he resisted. ACP Gyeabour pointed out that, the constable said in the ensuing struggle the riffle went off and killed the deceased instantly. The regional police commander indicated that following the incident, the police personnel had to be mobilised from Navrongo and Bolgatanga to help maintain the peace in the area. Mr Gyeabour, who described the incident as very unfortunate gave the assurance that the Police Administration would do everything possible to establish the truth and appealed to all those who were witnesses to furnish the regional command with the necessary and accurate information. source: graphic
