Police personnel have been dispatched to two villages near Nakpanduri in the Northern Region to help restore calm, following a shooting incident there yesterday.

Renewed clashes between residents in Sayeegu and Sanbiruq, both towns near Nakpanduri, led to the death of one person while another sustained gunshot wounds.

Over seventy houses were also torched.

The deadly clashes are believed to have been triggered by a chieftaincy and land dispute.

Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed this to Citi News said, the Police have begun investigations that will help in the arrest of the perpetrators.

“We have information that there are renewed clashes between Sayeegu and Sanbiruq, one person confirmed dead and one other person sustained gunshot wounds and is receiving treatment at a local clinic in Nakpanduri.”

He said Police personnel were quickly deployed to the place and “as we speak, things are calm.”

“No arrest has been made yet and we are on the ground to ensure that the situation does not degenerate into something else. As long as the situation remains unsolved the Police will continue to be there,” ASP Tetteh added.

Nakpanduri curfew lifted after 17 months

The Ministry of Interior in October 2015 lifted the curfew on Nakpanduri and its neighbouring towns following a recommendation of the Northern Regional Security Council (NRSC).

A dusk to dawn curfew was imposed on the Nakpanduri district in April 2014 following violent clashes between the Mamprusis and Konkombas
