Students from five Senior High Schools in the Wa Municipality have showcased their understanding of social issues, and presented proposals and plans on how to address them.

The event, held at the Wa Senior High Technical School, marked the Fourth Annual Project Citizen Showcase which was organized by the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE).

Issues showcased included stigmatization of persons with disabilities in political appointment in the Upper West Region, the effect of communication on the health status of the deaf and dumb and the high illiteracy rate among women in the region.

The rest were the challenges of women in community development and stigmatization of people living with HIV in the Municipality.

TI Ahmadiyya Senior High School, which treated the stigmatization of people living with HIV in the Wa Municipality, was adjudged the best school by the panel of judges.

The other schools which participated were Wa Technical Institute, Wa Islamic Senior High School, Wa Senior High School, and Wa Senior High Technical School.

Ms Dora Hammond, Director of Project Citizen, said the project was an innovative way of reaching out to the youth in promoting civic activities and motivating them to develop interest in the Constitution and to behave as good citizens.

She advised the students not to participate in Project Citizen for the sake of participation but to practise what they had learnt from the Project even after school.

Mr. Husein Sulemana Haruna, the Regional Director of NCCE, said partisan politics had polarized the country to the extent that political disputes were emerging in schools.

He appealed to the students to concentrate on issues that could bring social harmony.
