Vice President, John Dramani Mahama has handed over 100 farming tractors to the Savannah Development Authority (SADA) beneficiaries as part of government’s commitment to boost agriculture development in the country.

These 100 tractors are to be sent to 50 districts in the North, whiles additional 500 tractors are underway from the Brazilian government, Mr. Mahama added.

Addressing the gathering at Tamale in the Northern region, Mr. Mahama said that 6000 farmers were registered in 2011 alone under the programme ,whiles 10,000 farming families were added in 2012 .

According to him SADA would train farmers, service the tractors, and also give them chemicals and supply them fertilizers to enhance as well as sustain the programme.\

He noted that, SADA had initiated a partnership programme with some private companies which include, Mahindra, Jubilee Tractors and AVNASH.

“I must add that whiles Mahindra supplies the equipment needed for the farmers, Jubilee Tractors would supervise works at field, whiles AVNASH is into Oil and Rice production”, he disclosed.

The Vice president further hinted that, Tricycle motor bikes would soon be procured into the country by Mahindra Company through the Chinese government to assist the beneficiaries of SADA to monitor their farms and transport farm produce.

He also reiterated that SADA is currently working and supporting PBC shear-butter factory, World bank, UDS, Eastern corridor road constructions, Sawla road, Biupe inland station, and Afforestation programme to plant over 5million trees in Ghana especially in the northern zone, and was quick to add that SADA and VRA had also joined forces to get a dam constructed at the Pwalugu water reserves in the Upper East region.

Mr. John Mahama later visited and inspected operations at the AVNASH oil and rice plant in Tamale and Nyankpala respectively.
