An £18-million Millennium Village Project (MVP) under the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) is to be established to address challenges in the three regions in the Northern part of Ghana.

The project is also being supported by British Department for International Development (DFID).

The project would begin on pilot basis, and would cover portions of West Mamprusi District in Northern Region and Builsa District in Upper East Region benefitting 30,000 people.

Dr Joseph Mensah-Homiah, Team Leader, MVP, announced this at a validation workshop for the establishment of SADA MVP in Tamale.

The workshop was on the theme: “Accelerating progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone”.

According to him £15 million would be used for major interventions in areas such as infrastructure development, while £1.6 million would be used for monitoring and evaluation and £1.5 million for technical assistance and backstopping.

He said the five- year project would begin in October this year.

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Moses Mabengba, said the establishment of the MVP would offer a great opportunity for SADA and DFID to join forces in contributing to address the challenges confronting, Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.

He noted that the MVP was explicitly linked to achieve the MDGs and create wealth at the local level.

Mr. Mabengba however hinted that the MVP interventions would cover the areas of food production, nutrition, education, health services, roads, energy, communications, enterprise development, environmental management and business development.
