THE Vice-President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, has called on institutions responsible for regulating and promoting Ghanaian culture to take steps to avoid the adulteration of indigenous cultural values.

He charged them to ensure authentic understanding of local cultural values and to carry out research that would impart the relevant messages to foreigners especially students studying culture.

The Vice-President made the call when he inaugurated the Dagara Music Centre, a traditional music and dance training institute, at Medie near Accra.

Established in 2000, the centre has trained 200 foreigners including students and professors from Africa, Europe, USA, Asia and South America in local music and dance.

The inauguration was of the centre was on the theme, “harnessing culture for socio-economic development and nation building.”

The Director of the Dagara Music Centre, Mr Bernard Woma, said Africa could not create its own image without preserving and widely diffusing its culture.

He stressed the need to be cautious in ensuring that the culture of poor developing countries were not replaced with European-American culture.

He described the centre as a “modest contribution towards preserving and developing our collective heritage.”

Mr Woma called on the government, National Commission on Culture, Ministry of Tourism and Modernisation of Capital City, School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana and others to assist in realising the vision of the centre.

A member of the Council of State, Alhaji Bin Salih, who chaired the function, called for support in promoting local cultures and tourism.

The Centre performed several music and dance formations and launched an appeal for funds. The Vice- President contributed five million cedis.
