The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has invested over 5.3 million dollars in the Tamale Water Extension Project (TWEP) to improve water supply to the Tamale Metropolis and some districts that fall under MiDAs intervention zone in the Northern Region.

The 70.3 kilometer water extension project is expected to benefit 50,000 people, Mr. Bukari Mohammed, Zonal Manager of MiDA, told newsmen.

The project would involve the extension of pipelines to communities in the southern part of the Tamale Metropolis, the Savelugu/Nanton, Tolon/Kumbungu districts and the rehabilitation of the Pong-Tamale water supply system. Mr. Mohammed said the extension of the water in the southern part of the Tamale Metropolis would comprise laying pipelines to communities and standpipes at Wamale, Gbabshie, Zuo and Chanzeni. Extension of the water supply to the Savelugu/Nanton District would comprise laying of a 15-kilometer new transmission main, improvement works at the existing booster station located in Savelugu, construction of two service reservoirs in Savelugu and one at Moglaa, extension of distribution lines and the installation of public standpipes.

Mr. Mohammed said the rehabilitation of the Pong-Tamale water supply system would comprise the installation of new pumps at the intake building, extension of power to the intake site and the construction of a new conventional treatment plant.
