Haruna to Initiate Scholarship Scheme

The Member of Parliament for the Tamale South Constituency, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, as part of his contribution towards the promotion of high quality education in the country, particularly in the northern region, has announced his intention to institute a scholarship scheme to support not only the poor and brilliant but all the school-going children in his area of jurisdiction.
The scholarship scheme, which was to take effect within this year or at least the end of it, as he noted, would also serve as a powerful mechanism to encourage poor parents to send their children to school.

The MP, also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Youth Organizer, made this known at a durbar held at Fooshegu, a suburb in his constituency after the educational mapping exercise embarked on by Action Aid Ghana and the Northern Network for Education Development (NNED), as part of activities marking the Global Week of Action on Education.

The young but much outspoken MP said funds would be made available from his MPs’ common fund and support from other local and foreign partners who had expressed willingness to complement his outstanding vision.

Mr. Iddrisu indicated his preparedness to back also the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TAMA) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to provide adequate teaching and learning materials to the various schools in the constituency as well as adequate professional teachers.

The MP pledged as well his support for the Tamale Metro Assembly to ensure proper and adequate classrooms and teachers’ accommodation to encourage teachers to accept posting to the area.

According to him, the only therapy for poverty is to educate and empower the citizens to take up the challenge to become independent and financially viable. Education, he said, “is key to end poverty and over dependency.”

The MP therefore charged parents, chiefs and opinion leaders in the region, specifically in his constituency to co-operate with the teachers and education authorities to enhance their stay to facilitate quality education as well as the development of the people.

He however advised the students to take their studies seriously and abstain from premarital sex, which he said endangers their lives by way of attracting the deadly HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
