No doctors , No pharmacists

The Upper West Regional Health directorate indicate that most doctors and pharmacists who were posted to the region last year refused to report. Out of nine doctors who were posted to the region last year, only two reported, while all the nine pharmacists who were posted to the region failed to report.

The Upper West Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Alexis Nang-Beifubah confirmed this during the staff end of year get together organized by the Regional Hospital at Wa.

Dr. Nang-Beifubah however said that even though the hospital is facing a serious problem of lack of personnel its performance last year improved tremendously.

He cited the reduction of infant and maternal mortality rate and increased OPD attendance as some of the achievements of the hospital. He expressed worry that majority of the nurses are above fifty years and said that could lead to loss of personnel in the near future.

The Medical Director of Hospital, Dr. Jacob Abebrese said with the assistance of Basic Needs an NGO the hospital has put up a structure for a Psychiatric Unit to cater for the mental health need of the people.

The Chief of Sombo and a former Upper West Regional Director of Health, Dr. Francis Bankah who was the Chairman for the occasion appealed to the health workers to see their work as a sacrificial one and not to think of material gains.
