Tragedy at Nadowli

Seventeen members of the junior cadets of Knight of Saint John International at Nadowli have been involved in a lorry accident resulting in the amputation of the left hands of three of them at the Wa Regional Hospital.

The members were travelling from Jirapa to Nadowli on June 1 after a friendly football march between them and their counterpart in Jirapa.


The accident happened when the bus in which they were travelling veered off the road and fell on its side tumbled near the Nadowli District Assembly.

The amputees were made up of two boys and a girl.

Madam Gladys Nimie, a nurse in charge of the male surgical ward told newsmen that the victims, comprising 11 boys and six girls, sustained injuries.

She said three of the cadets had been discharged while the rest were responding to treatment.

Mr. Ziebu Mwini Tiribu, 28, the driver, told newsmen that he experienced difficulties in the steering of the vehicle and that resulted in the accident.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Mr. George Hikah Benson, the Deputy of Food and Agricultural Minister, Mr. Clement Eledi and the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, Madam Asibi Bawa Dy-Yakah, visited the accident victims.

Mr. Benson presented one bag of sugar, two bags of millet, cooking oil and two bags of rice for their upkeep.

He gave the assurance that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) would do all it could to help them in their schooling to achieve their desire goals in life.

Medical Director of the hospital who received the items, Dr. Jacob Abebrese, thanked Mr. Benson and the RCC.
