The Department for International Development (DFID), a British development organisation, has handed over newly-constructed school blocks, and other facilities, to seven communities in the Tolon-Kumbungu district, as part of measures to improve upon the educational infrastructure in the area.

The facilities included, a three-unit teachers' quarters for the Tolon, Lingbunga, Voggu and Gbulun Junior High schools. The rest were three-unit classroom blocks, offices and stores for Tali and Sakuba Junior High and Tuunaayili Primary schools.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony at Lingbunga, the Deputy Coordinating Director of Tolon-Kumbungu district, Mr. Musah Chimsi, said the facilities were part of additional infrastructures, to be provided by the assembly, as an incentive to promote teaching and learning in all schools in the area.

According to him, the tendency of teachers living in Tamale, and teaching in the district, would soon become a thing of the past, adding that teachers posted to communities where accommodation had been provided, would no longer have any excuse to live in Tamale and travel daily to teach in schools in the district.

Mr. Chimsi, who spoke on behalf of the Tolon-Kumbungu District Chief Executive, Suhiyini Wumbei, commended teachers in the district for working hard to maintain the standard record, of being the first school in the Northern Region to score first in the Basic School Certificate Examination (BECE), for the third time running.

He called on community leaders to complement the government's efforts, to motivate teachers to accept postings to the rural areas, by providing them with incentives that will make them feel comfortable while living in the communities.
