Boniface Saddique
The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr. Boniface Abubakar Saddique, says he is ever ready to serve the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in any capacity at any time, so if it pleases f1agbearer Nana Akufo-Addo to consider him as his running mate for the 2008 elections, he will accept it in good faith.

"The voice of the people is the voice of God. I am ready to serve the party but I don't determine where I should work," Mr. Saddique submitted when speaking to Happy FM, an Accra-based private radio station.

According to him, many were those who expressed doubt about his capacity to be the Northern Regional Minister when he was appointed by the President but the same people complained again when he was reshuffled to the Manpower, Youth and Employment Ministry because they wanted him to remain in the Northern Region.

He said political appointment is like a Fulani man and his cattle; where the herdsman will direct his whip, is where the cattle will go, and so anywhere the President decides for him he complies.

"And so if Nana Akufo-Addo meets with the party executives and he mentions my name as one of those to be considered as his Running Mate, so be it. I am not desperate to be the Running Mate. For me, I look up to God for what he has destined for me," the Minister explained.

Highlighting on acute water problem in the country, Mr. Saddique said the East/West Interconnection Programme is progressing steadily and when completed, the water problem in the Accra Metropolis such as Teshie/Nungua, Madina, Adenta, Darkuman and Legon will be a thing of the past.

He said as a result of the programme, distribution pipes are being laid, so in the process some pipelines are broken which brings about leakages and therefore the taps are closed to avoid waste.

He said he has had discussions recently with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and Aqua- Vitens and it was suggested that water tanks should be placed at vantage points in suburbs of Accra to serve people facing water problems. He pledged that he would do everything in his capacity to ensure that water tanks are provided within suburbs of Accra in the short-term. This, he believes, would lesson the problem of water in Accra.

Touching on water supply in other regions, the Minister said Tamale Water Project is far advanced as Bi-Water is working seriously for water to flow in the North and other areas. He regretted that while the country's population growth stands at about 2.5%, water growth is about one percent, a deficit of 15% which is a big challenge to close the gap.

He said work has started in Ashanti, Eastern, Upper West and other regions and hopefully the water problem in the country will be considerably reduced.
