Revitalize Bolgatanga Meat Factory

Mr. Isaac Atasige, a youth leader and a strong advocate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the Upper East Region, has called on government to revitalize the Bolgatanga Meat Factory, to serve as one of the antidotes to the unemployment problems in the area.

Mr. Atasige observed that the renewal of the factory, would not only encourage cattle farmers to expand their farm businesses, for incessant supply of animals for domestic and foreign consumption, but would also reduce the importation of cattle from neighbouring Burkina Faso and Mali into the country.

He cited that several articulated trucks cross the borders of these countries to export cattle each day to Kumasi, Accra, Tema and the other big cities where there are meat factories.

The NPP youth leader made this call, in a telephone interview with The Chronicle, after his return from the newly created Chiana-Paga District to Accra.

Mr. Atasige enumerated some of the benefits the country could derive from the skins, hoofs and horns of the animals that would be used to feed the factory when revitalized.

According to him, the parts could be used to feed the art and craft industry, for the production of leather bags, belts, hats, wallets, sandals and bangles, among others, for local consumption and export to international markets.

Mr. Atasige, on the other hand, called on the NPP government to move swiftly into the newly-created Chiana-Paga District to assist the idle youth, who were dawdling in the area without any occupations to earn a good living.

He however attributed the frequent conflict, in some parts of the region, to the idleness of the youth.

The outspoken politician thus urged President Kufuor to create more jobs, especially under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) to better their lot.
