POLITICIANS, people in academia and international development partners yesterday brainstormed here on how to accelerate the socio-economic and political development of the northern regions.

The roundtable discussion on the special initiative on the sustainable development of northern Ghana was addressed by Mrs Mary Chinnery-Hesse, Chief Adviser to the President.

She said, it was time intellectuals from the region concentrated on activities that would ensure productivity and growth of the people and the area.

Mrs Chinnery-Hesse said there is no way the area can achieve any meaningful development without the involvement and total commitment of the people of the north especially intellectuals and the wealthy.

If they had used the same zeal and vim they used to pursue other issues, the north would have been an enviable place.

She wondered why the North is lagging behind in spite of the numerous brilliant intellectuals in the area, stressing that they must strive to change the fortunes of the area.

"You must use whatever skills and talents you have to improve to the lives of your people," she said.

Mrs Chinnery-Hesse also asked the country’s development partners to give beneficiary communities the opportunity to choose projects based on need.

She remarked, "We cannot achieve the needed results if we do not allow the beneficiary communities to decide what is good for them."

She urged the people of northern Ghana to change their perception about themselves saying, "you should think big and never look inferior about yourself."

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Abubakari Saddiq Boniface in an interview with the Times welcomed the establishment of the Northern Development Fund with ¢250 billion as seed money and urged the people of the North to mobilise their energies and ideas towards realizing the objectives of the fund.

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris called on all to promote peace in the north, noting the numerous conflicts are the cause of the area’s under development.
