A five –day workshop organised by Northern Region Poverty Reduction Program, NORPREP had been opened at Damongo in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region.
The West Gonja District Planning Officer,Victor Takida ,who is also the focal person for NORPREP disclosed that the training of trainers workshop is intended to equip participants with the requisite skills to train Area Facilitation Teams (AFTs) so as to achieve the over all objectives of NORPREP.
He said this is also to improve the livelihoods and living conditions of poor rural communities, with emphasis on women and vulnerable groups.
Thus being done through broadening of rural development services and community and individual self-help capacity.
On her part, the District Chief Executive of West Gonja Hon. Janet Jambia Alhassan stated that any intervention aimed at reducing poverty is a welcome relief to both policy makers and citizens in the district for the fact that poverty has cause a lot of havoc in the society.
The District Chief Executive commended NORPREP urged them to expedite action on their activities so as to meet their set target within the defined time limit.
Hon. Jambia added that the strategies adopted by the program to target women and the vulnerable groups in poor rural communities is appropriate because majority of the native population reside in the rural areas who have limited access to social infrastructure,
"Designing programs intended for this group of people would not only help reduce poverty but bridge the gap".
