Mr. Alidu Baba, Northern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA) has indicated that the new Executive would adopt viable strategies to address the problem of charlatans in the journalism profession in the region.

He said journalism practice in the Northern Region of late, had been invaded by "laymen" and women who parade as journalists and sometimes extort money from District Chief Executives (DCEs) and other unsuspecting members of the public.

Mr. Alidu Baba who expressed the concern after the newly elected regional executives of the association were sworn in for a two-year term in Tamale , cautioned the culprits to desist from the act before the law caught up with them.

The members who were all elected unopposed, are: Mr. Alidu Baba of the GBC, Regional Chairman, Mr. Paul Osei-Tutu of the GNA, Regional Vice-Chairman, Mr. Caesar Abagali also of the GNA, Regional Secretary and Mr. Saaka Mohammed also of the GBC, Treasurer.

Mr. Alidu Baba said the media landscape had attracted numerous radio stations and private newspapers, and had brought in many unemployed persons, including Junior Secondary School leavers and in some instances, news vendors, "who parade as journalists to degrade the hard-won reputation of the profession".

Mr. Baba said the new executive would depend on the wise counsel of the past executive to ensure that problems in the region were addressed successfully.

Mr. Imoro Alhassan, former regional chairman advised the new executive to be wary of the challenges ahead and should try to overcome detractors who were not members and focus on playing the needed role to make journalism very attractive in the region.

Mr. Bright Blewu, General Secretary of the GJA reminded the new executives of the challenges ahead and asked them to always liaise with the national executives to know programmes of the association.
