The Garu Tempane District is taking steps to deal with the problem of cross border crimes.

These crime include smuggling, money laundering, extortion, armed robbery, stealing of cattle and other related crimes. To this end, a tripartite security meeting has been conveyed between Ghana, Burkina Faso and Togo to seek measures to redress the issue.

Security authorities within the Bawku Traditional area, which include Bawku Municipal which borders, Burkina Faso and Togo, Bawku West which borders Burkina Faso and Garu Tempane which borders Togo attended the meeting.

Speaking to www.ghanadistricts.com, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Emmanuel Asigri, said that strategies are being mapped up to curb the security menance within the area.

"We believe that if we put our hands together we will be able to put checks on the cross border crimes"

He indicated that such criminal activities occured in district as a result of the common relations between the Togo and Garu Tempane.
"Parts of some tribes are located in both sides of the two countries and interestingly some families have one part living across Togo and the other in Ghana", he explained.

This according to the DCE is a haven that criminals have adopted to commit crimes He noted that investigations carried out have traced the origin of most cross border crimes from Togo usually with the conivance of Ghanaians.

On the issue of smuggling, Hon. Asigri pointed out that because of the free port trade in Togo, many people prefer to buy items such as texiles and other items and smuggle them into the country.

This situation has been worsened by the absence of the Customs Exercise and Preventive Service (CEPS) at its border which has created an avenue for smugglers to operate.

He added that the issue is seriously affecting, the country’s revenue.
