School attendance in the Kassena Nankana district has remarkably increased since the commencement of the school feeding programme.

The project, which is being run on pilot basis has four primary schools in the district benefiting from it. The schools are Manyoro Primary School, Navro-Pungu Primary School,Nayag Nia Primary School and Korgnia Primary School.

Under the programme, school children are fed one balanced meal a day. Speaking to ghanadistricts, the District Planning Officer, Mr Collins Ohene Gyan said, prior to the inception of the school feeding programme,Navro-Pungu Primary School had enrolled 764 pupils however, the figure has now risen to 838.

Also enrollment in Nayag Nia Primary School has increased by 149 pupils. Previously, the number of pupils were 574 but currently 723.

Mr Ohene Gyan said by virtue of the fact that pupils are fed each day, they make it a point to attend classes regularly.

This, according to him has consequently reduced the rate of absentism.

He indicated that a meal a day, had improved the nutritional status of the children but added that although these was a remarkable improvement, the project was faced with some challenges.

Among these challenges, is the fact that there is an exodus of pupils from non-feeding schools to the schools benefitting from the feeding programme.

According to him, this has put some pressure on the teachers. In this regard, the district is sponsoring a number of teachers to help ease the problem.
