Work on the construction of a second library in Tamale to serve the reading needs of the general public has been reactivated.

The 500-seating capacity library would be equipped with modern facilities and serve both adults and children. It also has a conference room and a computer laboratory with an Internet facility.

The library project began in 1976 as a subsidiary to the main Tamale Library that. has become too small to contain the growing needs of the public, including students.

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFLIND) is sponsoring the renovation of the new library.

The conference hall and the section for adults are already completed awaiting finishing touches and furnishing.

The entire project, which was supposed to have been completed in May this year has been delayed due to some technical difficulties.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the acting Regional Librarian, Mrs Augustina Kazussah, expressed gratitude to the GETFUND for its immense support towards the refurbishment of the library.

She said a library was an important asset for the development of knowledge and education in any society, "it is an embodiment of wisdom and a legacy that tells the story of previous generations".

She explained that despite the advent of modern information accessing devices, library attendance was still recognised because of the quiet and serene environment it created for studies.

"There is still information one cannot find on the computer but you are sure to get from the library and it is hoped that when this facility is completed a lot more people would benefit greatly,’’ she added.

Mrs Kazussah appealed to the government and philanthropists to support the library with books and computers to improve its stockpile.

She, however, encouraged children, especially, to patronise the library to improve on their spoken and written English at school to enable them to perform well in their examinations.
