THE DIRECTOR General of the Ghana Health Services (GHS), Dr. Elias Sory has indicated that the main headache of his administration among other things was how to totally eradicate the guinea worm disease, which he said was creating a very bad picture about the country at the international level.

According to him, the guinea worm and its level of destruction in the country especially in the Northern Region had constantly been his major source of worry and embarrassment since the time he was the Northern Regional Director of the health services.

Dr. Sory who was speaking at the National Guinea Worm Eradication Mid-Year Review Meeting in Tamale, therefore suggested that the National Secretariat of the Guinea Worm Eradication Programme be moved to the Northern Regional capital Tamale so as to ensure effective monitoring and education on the disease.

He observed that it was quite unfair and unacceptable for Ghana to establish the Guinea Worm Secretariat in Accra when about 96% of the disease was being recorded in the northern region.

The GHS Director General observed that the level of destruction of the disease despite the serious efforts and strategies by government clearly indicates that Ghana was loosing the fight against the Guinea Worm disease.

Dr. Sory therefore entreated all health officials to pay equal attention to the non-affected communities before they also get infested by the guinea worm.

Dr. Sory passionately called on all District Chief Executives (DCEs) of the various affected districts to engage their traditional and opinion leaders in the eradication of the disease.

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris re-emphasised his usual claims that he was always traumatized inwardly, since it had become extremely difficult for the region to announce a breakthrough of the guinea worm disease.

He noted that, the Savelugu-Nanton district of the northern region alone accounts for 45% of the disease, which he indicated, was a disgrace to the district and the region in general. Saying, “guinea worm is not an enviable label that the region should carry as the universal centre of the disease”.

Ms Lamisi Mbila, Miss Ghana 2006 said, society must begin to realise that, as long as they continue to drink from contaminated sources of water, the expected reduction in the guinea worm endemic would remain a big problem.

The beauty queen also pleaded with government to endeavour to make large quantities of pipe filters available to affected communities as well as educating the folks to desist from drinking from guinea worm infested dams.
