Despite a court injunction on the enskinment of a chief in the Central Gonja District in Kusawgu, one of the contenders, Salawura Sulemana Jakpa, has been enskinned as Kusawguwura.

Early Saturday morning, the Northern Regional Security Council dispatched about 100 security personnel of police and military to the town to avert a possible clash between two factions of the skin.

It had also written to the Yagbonwura (paramount chief of Gonja traditional area) pleading with him to postpone the enskinment of a Kusawguwura until the matter was settled by the court.

The Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustaph Idris, told the Times that there had been uneasy calm in the area since the funeral of the late Kusawguwura Kplawoso Kofi Amanfo in 2001, due to the rivalry by two people from two gates of the Kusawgu kinship, Salawura Suleman Jakpa of Jakpa’s gate, and chief Tamaperwura Ewuntomah of Adam’s gate.

Some residents fled the area on Friday, fearing that there would be a clash between the two gates as both of them announced that they were going to enskin their chiefs yesterday.

Sensing danger, some of the elders held a press conference appealing to the REGSEC to swiftly stop the installation to avoid blood shed.
They also sent a petition to the BNI Northern Regional Police Commander and the Regional BNI Commander, stating that the two gates were fully armed with dangerous weapons and could cause havoc in the area should the installation come on.

The installation which was done in the early hours of yesterday, was without the traditional drumming and dancing that accompany traditional installation of chiefs in the area.

Information reaching the Times indicated that the installation had heightened the already volatile situation in the town.

There have been intensive patrols in the town and barriers have been mounted at vantage points to search all in-coming vehicles to ensure that fire arms were not imported into the town.
