An NGO, Business Development Consultancy Centre, has organized a workshop for women in peace building in Tamale.
The move is to support efforts at finding a lasting solution to the Dagbon conflict.
Last Saturday members of the Andani gate of the Dagbon traditional area held a press conference to press home their call on government to resolve the chieftaincy dispute. But while the Andanis are at it, the non-governmental organization is hoping to also ease the tension with the workshop.
The women at the workshop discussed issues militating against the realization of the lasting peace in the Dagbon and suggested solutions to challenges identified.
The Northern Region particularly the Dagbon Tradition setting has in the last couple of years started man made disasters. This included the 24 March 2004 security crises, which resulted the murder of the overlord of Dagbon Ya Na Yakubu Andani II and some 40 of his kinsmen.
The perpetrators are yet to be arrested and prosecuted.
This has torn apart the two gates of the Dagbon kingdom and has ostensibly brought mistrust in the deliberation led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu in committee that was established by government to mediate the Dagbon conflict.
Peace advocates has held series of workshops, forums and seminars to reconcile the two gates to bring lasting peace to the area.
The workshop was organized by an NGO, Business Development Consultancy Center for women in Peace building.
Prominent among the issues discussed by the participants were the effects of Dagbon crises on the individuals, region and nation as a whole.
Another issue that came up was the absence of proper Dagbon constitution for the selection of Dagbon Chiefs, independence of women in active decision-making and the proliferation of small arms in the region.
The participants recommended that the two gates be united for the smooth burial of the King Ya Na Yabu Andani II to bring lasting peace to the area.
The appealed to government to support the Kruga Na to exercise his powers in acting as YaNa as well as create a continuous dialogue between the people of the are and government to ensure trust and lasting peace in Dagbon and the region as a whole.
