Gender Development Officers in the newly created District Assemblies in the Northern Region have received ten motorcycles valued at 300 million cedis.
Some of the beneficiary assemblies are: Central Gonja, Sawla/Tuna/Kalba, Karaga, Nanumba South and Bunkprugu/Yunyoo.
The motorcycles were provided under the District Capacity Building Project (DISCAP) to enhance the work of the Gender Development Officers in the districts.
Dr. Chris Brown, the Canadian Team Leader made the presentation through the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris in Tamale .
He said the mainstreaming of gender activities had been one of the important components of the DISCAP project.
He noted that if the Assemblies were to make any headway in their development efforts then they had to ensure that gender issues were adequately addressed in their decision-making processes and programmes.
Mr. Michael Opoku-Nkansah, Deputy Regional Coordinating Director who represented the Minister, expressed the hope that the motorcycles would facilitate the work of the Gender Officers.
He urged the officers to take proper care of the motorcycles and to effectively monitor the various projects and programmes being undertaken by the Assemblies.
Mr. Henry Akantapulsi, Regional Economic Planning Officer regretted that the DISCAP project, which had reached an important stage of its development, would soon come to an end.
He therefore appealed to NGOs to fill the vacuum that would be created to ensure steady development of the districts.
