The government has sourced 39 million Euros from the Netherlands for the improvement of domestic water supply to consumers in Wa. The money would be used to expand and rehabilitate water systems in the town and pump water from the Black Volta, which is 18 kilometres from Wa.

The Central Tender Board has finished with the procurement process and would soon come out with approval for the tendering processes to begin, Mr Christopher Addai, the Deputy Minster of Water Resources Works and Housing, said this at a People's Assembly at Wa on Monday. He said 41 billion cedis had been earmarked for the provision of water in guinea worm endemic communities this year and 63 boreholes would be sunk to enable 17,000 inhabitants to have access to good drinking water.

Me Clement Eledi, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, said the government has imported 400 tractors together with their implements for distribution to farmers out of which 250 had arrived and are being assembled. He said the government would provide two drilling rigs to each region to pump water for agricultural activities during the dry season. This will minimize the problem of low agricultural production during the dry months.

Mr Eledi urged the people to support the government to implement its laudable development programmes, saying, "If we allow the government to fall we will never get any government to perform the way this government is doing".

The two Deputy Ministers together with Mr Ambrose Dery, the Upper West regional Minster, Alhaji Abubakari Sadique Boniface, the Minister of Manpower, Youth and Employment and Mr Mac Adams Banda, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, took turns to answer questions. The questions centred on provision of good roads, electricity, good drinking water, dams, school blocks and the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Mr Dery said contract for the tarring of the last stretch of the Bole-Bamboi road, which dominated issues raised at last year's People's Assemblies throughout the region, had been awarded.

Alhaji Boniface said 5,422 unemployed youth had been engaged in the National Youth Employment Programme in the region out of a national total of 79,000 and urged political functionaries to refrain from politicizing the programme in order to make it succeed.
