Another violent attempt to disturb the peace in Dagbon has left 12 people with gunshot wounds and seven suspects being arrested.

According to the Northern Regional Police Command, the seven were picked up for their alleged involvement in the shooting incident that occurred at Salinkpang, a farming community along the Tamale-Yendi Road in the Yendi District, last Saturday.

According to the Regional Police Commander, Mr Ephraim Okoe Brakatu, the names of the suspects were being withheld for security reasons.

The victims were travelling from Tamale to Yendi to pay homage to the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Na Abdulai Andani.

They were part of a convoy of youth groups who boarded vehicles from Tamale, amidst drumming, to Yendi when the incident happened.

The group was alleged to have further been pelted with stones by some irate youth on their arrival at Yendi, near the community centre, leading to the smashing of the windscreens of some of the vehicles.
The Tamale youth retaliated by burning some houses at Yendi.

The victims were treated and discharged at the Yendi Hospital. Calm has returned to the area, while security personnel in the area have intensified their patrols.

The timely intervention of a joint military and police team, who had to call for re-enforcement by armoured vehicles and security men from Tamale, prevented the situation from escalating.

Mr Brakatu said his outfit was investigating the matter to ascertain the reasons for the disturbance.
“At the moment, we are at a meeting,” he stated.

Last Monday, the former Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Boniface Abubakari Saddique, inaugurated a seven-member Council of Elders, headed by the Kuga-Na Abdulai Braimah, at a ceremony at Yendi.

The inauguration of the council formed part of the reconciliation process in Dagbon and was considered a significant development to the achievement of sustainable peace in the area that had witnessed one of the most complex issues on security and chieftaincy in the history of the country.
