He stated that the level of water pollution and land degradation in some parts of the region was alarming and that it was imperative for all especially, the chiefs to join forces with the government to protect the environment.
Mr Saeed made the call at the launch of a regional committee to fight against illegal mining in the region in Tamale yesterday.
He lamented that the emergence of illegal mining in the region had led to the pollution of some rivers in the area.
The minister mentioned that the Regional Security Council would step up measures to curb illegal mining in the region.
He said that security agencies have been tasked to provide 24-hour patrols at some of the areas where illegal activities were taking place.
Mr Saeed admonished all those engaged in illegal mining in the area to put a stop to it as the security personnel deplored would not spare anyone caught in the act.
The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, on her part urged the assemblies to intensify efforts to halt the land degradation and water pollution.
She emphasised that as local authorities they ought to initiate measures to effectively and efficiently deal with the situation.
Hajia Mahama assured the assemblies of the readiness of the ministry to support them to protect the environment for current and future generations.
She stated that the primary duties of the assemblies was to ensure that natural resources at their jurisdictions were preserved and protected and only used for the general good of people.
The minister challenged the assemblies to do everything possible to ensure the committee carry out its mandate without major challenges.
Hajia Mahama mentioned that the government was liaising with development partners to find alternative livelihood ventures for the youth, and advised them to stop the illegal mining and avail themselves to the numerous opportunities that would be provided by the government.
Of late some youth have embarked on illegal mining in some communities in some of the districts in the region.
