The Overlord (Nayiri) of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohugu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, has expressed his readiness to accept Mamprusis and Tampulmas from the North Gonja District of the Northern Region to the proposed North-East Region.
The two ethnic groups have kicked against plans to have them added to the Savannah Region and have vowed not to take part in the scheduled referendum to that effect.
As a result, they met with the Nayiri last weekend and channelled their grievances to him.
They expressed interest in being part of the proposed North-East Region instead of the Savannah Region.
A representative of the Nayiri, Tarana John Wuni, explained that once it was their decision to join the North-East Region, he cannot deny them that privilege.
“We have had this problem for a long time to the extent that the Yagbonwura came to Nalerigu because of this dispute. The coming of the creation of new regions offers an opportunity to deal with this issue once and for all, and the people have openly expressed their desire to be with the North-East Region”, he stated.
He explained that this was not the first time the two ethnic groups were pressing on the government to grant their wish to be part of an area which has been earmarked for the North-East Region, explaining that their agitations started as far back as 2011.
He revealed that the Nayiri will, however, meet with his cabinet and if there is the need to dispatch a delegation to Yagbonwura to make him appreciate the need to allow the Mamprusis and Tampulmas to be part of the proposed new region, it shall be done.
“The people have a right to determine where they want to be and I am sure he cannot say no to their request”, he stated.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Tampulma community in the Gonja kingdom, Amadu Latif, has reiterated their earlier threat that any attempt to add them to the proposed Savannah Region will spell doom for their families.
“There is no assurance of our peace, even now that we’re not fully part of them, see the attacks on us, this year alone they burnt two Tampulma communities, you can imagine what will happen to us should we be added to them,” he cried.
“No development will spare our lives and stop the burning of Tampulma communities. We will boycott the voting exercise should our plea not be heard”, he threatened.
