Former President John Dramani Mahama says he is close to announcing his decision on his political future.
Mr Mahama explained that the delay in communicating his decision was to allow the party re-organise itself
He said after seeing the success of the process so far, it will be prudent to announce his decision.
Addressing hundreds of party faithful who gathered for National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) ninth Unity Walk in the Upper East regional capital Bolgatanga, Saturday, he noted that he has had the opportunity to discuss the issue with people who have the party’s best interest at heart.
“Sooner rather than later…I think very very soon, I would make my political future clear…as I said earlier, I do not want my decision whether to run or not to affect the reorganization of the party,” he said to rapturous cheers.
The issue of who leads the largest opposition party into the next general election in 2020 has been a hot potato for political analysts.
Former President Mahama polled a little above 44% of total votes cast in the last election, the lowest for an incumbent President, and losing the Presidency to the New Patriotic Party's Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
This has brought serious debate within the NDC if he needs to be given the opportunity to run again considering he will serve only one term.
When the former president was asked at one of their Unity Walks in the Central Region last year, he stressed the need for the leadership of the Party across the structures -Branch, Constituency, Regional and National - to work towards educating supporters on the ongoing Branch reorganization activities.
He implored the executives to use the opportunity to build up the support base of the party in their communities
He believes stating his intention will help the party to focus on the task ahead and how it is moving forward toward election 2020.
